WHY DAILY DETOX
Traditional medicine promotes detoxification as a healthy and gentle daily habit, with the occasional more in-depth reset at certain times of year. It’s best to create a lifestyle of healthy choices to support your body’s natural detoxification processes on an ongoing basis. We can condition the body’s detoxification mechanisms every day in small ways by strategically incorporating detoxifying herbs into your diet and lifestyle.
It’s important to detox so that our body is not building up a large amount of toxins that can ultimately lead to imbalances and illness. When we attempt to do juice cleanses or elimination detoxes, we’re often setting ourselves up to fail, and possibly doing more harm than good. Without proper guidance and expertise, many detox programs can cause imbalances in the body. The detoxification organs are powerful but also sensitive, just like all of our vital organs and systems. When we support them with daily habits that keep toxins from building up in the first place, and even slowly and gently remove toxins that have already built up in a sustainable way, we’re working with the body and not against it. This makes for more long lasting and beneficial results.
5 WAYS TO DETOX DAILY
A complete detox overhaul can sound great in theory, but without the right vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to support your body, you can end up dumping waste and toxins only for them to end up reabsorbed into the bloodstream instead of being properly eliminated. The best way to support detoxification in the body is to take daily actions to allow for daily elimination.
1. Sleep
Our liver is a major elimination organ, and it does most of its detoxification work at night while we sleep—mainly between 10pm and 2am. That’s why sleep is crucial to proper detoxification and why some herbs, such as milk thistle, are best consumed right before bed. Try to align your sleep cycle to include these hours as much as possible to maximize your detox time. They call it beauty sleep for a reason!
2. Detoxification herbs
Like giving your city public works department more garbage trucks and recycling bins, detoxification herbs enhance the rate at which the body can process waste. Regular use can lead to stronger digestion, improved immune function, optimal weight, clear thinking, elimination of food allergies and better mood. Detoxification herbs include ginger, nettle, dandelion, lemon peel, and more.
3. Bitters
Our liver system is designed to interact with bitter flavors. Anything with a significantly bitter taste has the ability to stimulate the liver to pump out more bile— both through the reflex of the taste receptors on the tongue or in the GI tract itself. Without bitter plants in our diet, we miss out on a huge support to the liver and its essential detoxification process. Adding bitters to our daily routines means less burden of waste for the body to deal with and, as a result, more energy and vitality.
4. Drink Water
It’s been encouraged since the day we were born, stay hydrated! Water does more than just hydrate the body, though. Drinking water helps regulate digestion, aids in nutrient absorption, and helps remove toxins by transporting them through urine, sweat, and even our breath. Drinking water is a daily practice you may have already mastered, but detoxification is another great reason to stay on top of it!
5. Cilantro
